The World report on disability, published in 2011, said about 25 millPWPLDs Nigerians had at least one disability, while 3.6 million of these had very significant difficulties in functioning. The 2006 Nigerian census reported 3,253,169 people with disabilities, or 2.32% of the total population of 140,431,790 in that year.In developing countries, particularly Nigeria. Most of the diseases causing disabilities are preventable. Many of these are infections which could be prevented with medical care.
The perception of handicapping conditions by most Nigerians it is argued, are greatly influenced by myth and superstition, which in turn influences the negative attitude of people towards disabled people. The lack of medical facilities has contributed to the spread of common diseases which otherwise would have been controlled or eradicated, as is the case in developed countries like Britain and America.Rights of disabled people are emphasized. This includes the right to an education and the right of access into buildings. There is indeed a need for a critical movement of leaders who will champion the cause for a more inclusive society. That is why we at YADF have committed our lives to improving the lives of PWDs and advocating for inclusion in all spheres of the society for PWDs
The event featured Talks, Panel Discuson, Mentoring, Poetry, Exhibition/Refreshments, Networking donation donation and Free Medical Check-Up for all Participants.
